There are certain moments of time that have the weight to change your views on how you see certain things or how you’ve always seen them. After shooting ten years of traditional weddings, this waterfall elopement was that for me. Rob and Emily first called me to talk about photographing their city hall elopement here in Ithaca. They were game but then told me that they didn’t want to wear their masks the entire time ( thanks covid.) My response was ” then why don’t you just elope under a waterfall.” To which they responded with ” you can do that?”
It is so interesting to me how as a society we are so used to making weddings fit in a box. We forget that its a day you can create. You can make your wedding day your favorite day. It makes me sad sometimes that adventure elopement’s are a big thing on the west coast but not as big on the east coast. My dream is that one day more people will realize how special eloping in the Finger Lakes can be.
Rob and Emily stayed in this super unique storybook looking Airbnb on the outskirts of Ithaca. Her flowers were from Wegmans and some that she had picked outside the Airbnb. Her dress she found at a vintage shop in New York City and she had created her own vintage veil. Everything about that day was about them.
It torrential down poured right as their vows started, the officiant slipped on the rocks, the thunder rolled in and the lighting cracked through. You couldn’t tell the difference between tears and rain drops. They wrote their own vows, I got to bless the ring, and then they made it official . We ran back to our car laughing and I got to sign as the witness which I’ve never gotten to do before. A lens got ruined that day and I don’t even care, it was magical, intimate and just down right beautiful.
